A Simple Guide to Perfect Kitchen Design

  1. Establish what you need – easier said than done, right? Agreed, but this really where you have to start. What sort of changes to you need to make? Or do you need a completely new kitchen?
  2. Do a research – learn what is available and what style works best for you. This is especially important if you find it hard to figure out how your kitchen should look like. Don’t rush, it’s like a foundation. You can use below pages, but also physical magazines.
  3. Think of the design you like – once you get inspired you can decide what kind of design you like the most. Or combine few things and work your own. You should feel good in your kitchen and it should express your personality.
  4. Set a budget – you can also start from this one and work your stuff within certain budget. The only reason why we have made it our no.4 is because once you find your perfect design, you can also figure it out how to fit the budget.
  5. Plan your appliances and space around them – if they are too close to each other you cannot effectively use one without blocking another. Of course some kitchens are small, but in such case think how can you organise it to maximise the ease of using the appliances.
  6. Think of the kitchen traffic – another matter that’s easy to overlook. Try to imagine how many people will be using this kitchen at the same time. If it’s small don’t dig your heels in to have an island. Maximise the space, you will need it more than you think.
  7. Add some extra sockets and lights – honestly speaking we believe you cannot get too much light in your kitchen area. You might not need them all all the time, but extra light under the cabinet can really make your meal prep much more pleasant.

Factors to Consider When Planning a Kitchen

Above we have went through 7 most important steps to kitchen design. Now, when you go further down this path there you have to start planning your kitchen.

And we feel there are also few more important factors to consider during this process.

We have touched it a bit in our 7-steps guide when we discussed appliances, traffic and lights. Speaking of appliances it’s worth to put a little bit extra effort (or money) and make them look built-in.

The entire kitchen looks much cleaner and nice, especially in modern designs. If you have more old-school or retro design it probably makes more sense to let them shine.

Plan your Appliances

Another thing we touched and is worth to remember is trying to visualise your kitchen traffic. It might sound funny, but it’s true and strictly related with giving your appliances enough space.

Try to think how you will move around your kitchen and where it makes more sense to put certain things. For example trash bin, sink, fridge, oven and so on.

The most important is what people tend to call working triangle – cooker, sink and refrigerator.

Plus, let’s not forget finishing touches do count. So even if you have very tight budget you can make your kitchen look much nicer thanks to small details.

Choosing a Builder

If you have a small budget you probably will try to avoid any major changes, but heating and plumbing is pretty important factor. Rather often piping is not very efficient, so it might be necessary to do some extra work.

Luckily if done right it shouldn’t cost too much. Last, but not least is choosing the right crew.

Of course you can try to do it yourself and we have even prepared few blog posts that you might find helpful. However, you have to remember it’s pretty big project.

Hiring professionals can really save your time and money. Pick someone who can show you their previous projects, but before decide what you find most important, cause you simply can’t have it all:
