Friends and Family

As already mentioned above you are basically going to do someone else’s job. So what is the best way to start? To watch a professional doing it. Or maybe not even a professional, but someone who knows what he’s doing.

Check out with your friends or family and ask if there’s anyone who could teach you few things and you could watch them in action. It’s almost certain you will not jump into electricity, plumbing or building drywall straight away.

Or maybe never since some people prefer to stay away from more sensitive things. Which is quite understandable.

Online Sources

If you are a bit more shy and do not like to ask for help, we have good news. You can find almost anything online about any topic. There is Google, YouTube, books, forums, social media channels, you name it.

You can find tips, tricks, how-tos and much more. The bad part about is that you can find quite a lot of poor and below average quality content across the Internet.

Honestly speaking you just have to learn to separate the good from the bad.

And you do that by consuming multiple sources. At the end of the day it’s much more important to put in the work and you can’t beat learning by doing.

So just consume as much content as you can about the topic you are after to know the steps and do it. With the time you just become better.

Handyman Courses

Another way is to take one of the handyman or house maintenance courses we’re about to cover in the next paragraph. Whatever you decide remember that you will need a lot of patience. It might be difficult at the beginning, but practice makes perfect.

Take your time to figure out stuff, it’s not a competition.

Just plan enough time ahead and start early, don’t postpone till sunday evening and expect it to finish on time. It’s almost certain it will take more time than you thought.

Plus it might be necessary to buy few things, so check the opening hours of your local trade store. As a matter of fact their stuff can be amazing source of knowledge as well.

You can learn to be more #handy from friends and family, through online sources or #handyman courses. But the most important part is to do it #diy #homeowner

Do I Need Handyman Course

I don’t want to make it sound like you need an engineer degree to that, but you have to work your brain muscle much more than most people think.

We would say everything can be broken into five phase process:

  1. Identify What Needs to be Fixed and do a Research
  2. Have a Vision for Your Finished Product
  3. Prepare the Entire Area and Equip Yourself With Required Tools
  4. Just do it Already!
  5. Don’t be Afraid to Ask for Help

Everything around your #house can be fixed thanks to this 5-step process #diy #handyman #handy

Identify What Needs to be Fixed and do a Research

This is the intellectual part. You have to understand what broke down and how to make it right. With more complex things it might be also necessary to understand how certain things work. Look for every information you can find: blogs, forums, youtube videos, graphs, etc.

We cannot really tell you which source is the best. It might feel like YouTube is the best source, but it all depends on how you prefer to absorb knowledge. Plus, some videos have extremely low value added.

Have a Vision for Your Finished Product

This point is actually an extension of the point above and it’s an intellectual part as well. Once you have done your research and learnt about the topic as much as you could you have to develop a vision of what needs to be done.

How does it work in case it something that has broke down.

Or ultimately how would it look like if it’s more on construction side. Like plasterboard wall, shelving or installation of lights.

Just try to imagine the end product once you’ve done all the work. It helps a lot especially when you are not very experienced.

Prepare the Entire Area and Equip Yourself With Required Tools

Probably the most important point. Whatever you do preparation is the key. Make sure you have enough space to work and you remove anything that might get damaged. Additionally you cannot do much if all you’ve got is a screwdriver.

Unless, you are just planning to fix few loose screws 😉

Professional power tools can be rather expensive. Luckily, you should be well off with regular cordless drill driver and a box of hand tools you can get in B&Q or your local hardware store. We recommend using the latter.

Just do it Already!

Once you have done all the prep do not postpone the task. Just dive in and do it already. We tend to push away stuff we are even remotely afraid of. But most of the time it doesn’t look that bad once we start working on it. It’s a fact.

We were quite afraid starting this blog ourselves! Like what to write, where do we start, how do you even write a blog?

But once you start to learn and then you implement that knowledge every next task is less scary. Besides, stop thinking about it like it was something bad. DIY and all sort of handyman tasks are pretty fun.

Plus, these are the real life skills all of us would like to have.

Don’t be Afraid to Ask for Help

I believe this one right here is pretty crucial. Do not be afraid to ask for help. It might be a professional, a friend or asking question on some sort of a forum. Ultimately you can drop us a line at diy@poldabuilders.com and we will try to help.
